Semester 1 consists of 30 hours of English instruction, or 15 two-hour sessions. The focus of this class will be on real-life language use and the acquisition of four skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. During class time, you should expect to engage in group and pair work, and to actively participate in class.



After successful completion of semester 1 of this course, you will be able to: 

  • Ask and answer questions about one’s personal and professional interests

  • Craft a compelling resume and cover letter

  • Anticipate and respond to commonly-asked interview questions

  • Develop a product or service that solves a problem

  • Discuss trends and consequences related to consumer culture

  1. Formative assessments (40%)

    1. Attendance (10%)

    2. Participation (20%)

    3. Quizzes (10%)

      1. Will occur periodically in the first 10 minutes of class

  2. End of unit assessments (40%)

    1. Unit 1: Submit a resume and cover letter tailored to the job of your choice (10%)

    2. Unit 2: Pitch a product or service of your own design (30%)

      1. Oral presentation in pairs

  3. Final exam (20%)

    1. Will consist of listening, reading and writing and can cover any/all material covered in class
